So, the Dummies guides are a series of works. Nov 07, Shannon Haddock rated it it was amazing. Most striking is the abysmal portrayal of women, whose roles are limited to swooning at our rugged all American space heroes as they figure out how to beat the bad guys. If they wanted to have green bug-eyed Martians flying around space in hot air balloons, they did it, and ed think twice about whether they’d be proven wrong.

However, this book isn’t trying to be a nuanced and thought-provoking lenskan it is simply striving to be entertaining escapism. You lemsman, writing this review makes me wonder what effect the movies had in changing the nature of written science-fiction. Smith told the stories with a vibrancy that left the reader breathless at the adventure and heroism, with enough scientific gobbledygook to instill a sense of wonder – silvery teardrop shaped spacecraft powered by and ‘intertia-less’ drive that could fling them out of the solar system in a matter of seconds, ray guns that dealt death to the bad guys but only after refusing the chance to change their ways, of course and the mighty Lenses – weapon, communication device and symbol of the Galactic Patrol’s righteous power, handed to humanity by the ancient peace-loving alien civilisation the Arisians to fight the wmith Eddorians.

Again, though, the Lensman series is not about credibility. Harry Harrison wrote the humorous and comprehensive parody Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers in Admire them for their zmith on later, better works, but please don’t feel obliged to actually read them. However, some people might want to read them in an order that avoids spoilers.

I don’t know that the non-spoiler version of Triplanetary was actually in the Lensman universe.

Lensman Series

Like many concepts in the book world, “series” is a somewhat fluid and contested notion. He seems to have ret-conned Triplanetary while writing Children of the Lens, but changed the Arisians for the book versions, making rather a fuss about their omniscience implausibly, IMHO in First Lensman. Refresh and try again. Later on, we get faster-than-light travel by means of the “inertialess drive”, and Smith hardly even bothers to whitewash it.

Triplanetary (Lensman, #1) by E.E. “Doc” Smith

Fortunately, my weapons are even more powerful! I can see the seeds that planted in later sci-fi authors and there are some great ideas here, but I found it was poorly written and at times the author really didn’t seem to know where he was planning on going and it meandered a lot. I really liked this book. You’ll be fine to start with Galactic Patroland in fact if you start with Triplanetary as I did, many years ago you’ll get confused when you get to Galactic Patrol and things get quite different and somewhat inconsistent.
